Nestled in the rural countryside of the Redwood Valley, you’ll find a unique and very special winery surrounded by old, craggy, organically grown vines that date back to the farm’s genesis in 1955. You’ll also find a unique and very special man who has been farming these vines and making exceptional wines with his family for over half a century. Charlie Barra is an iconoclast in Mendocino, responsible for much of the development and growth of the organic viticultural movement in the region and throughout California. Working alongside men like Karl Wente and Robert Mondavi, he was also instrumental in California’s shifting focus from producing ‘vin ordinaire’ to more quality-driven, varietal wines. He was one of the first growers in the North Coast to plant Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Since that time, the winery has added Petite Sirah, Merlot, Zinfandel and Pinot Blanc as well as Muscat Canelli and Sangiovese, reflecting his Italian heritage. The farm’s 200 acres of vineyards are rolling and picturesque. They are interspersed with cover crops and planted on soils rich in microbial life, further showcasing the winery’s continued emphasis on organic viticulture and ‘hands-off’ sustainable vineyard practices. At 87 years young, Charlie continues to run the property, with plenty of help from his family, particularly his lovely wife Martha. The family’s values and hard work are clearly reflected in their entire range of wines: charming and forward with real depth and character.
