The winery was founded by a group of wine-loving friends on a property once owned by the Cistercian Order of Nuns, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church. It has operated as a fruit orchard, and was owned by a local family who operated it as a mink farm until 1970 when it was abandoned. In 1995, the land was converted into a vineyard, the first grapes were planted in 1996, the first vintage was made in 2000, and the winery opened in 2002. To date, we farm more than 180 estate acres.
Nose:
The aromatics are vibrant and are quick to rise off the wine. This is a very fruit forward wine, with aromas of pineapple, nectarine, star fruit and lemon zest bursting forth. Undertones of flint and wet stone are characteristic of the limestone-rich vineyards on the Beamsville Bench, the appellation where Angels Gate Winery is located.
Palate:
Medium, balanced acidity provide this wine with a clean mouth feel. Pineapple and nectarine really dominate the flavour profile. Lots of fruit sweetness, without the stickiness of high sugar makes this wine pleasant even for the dry wine lover. The finish is very clean, with the vibrant fruity characters remaining on the palate for a long time.
